January 9th, 2012 by Stewart McKie - Executive Advisor

2011 was another exciting year for XBRL. I am indebted to various XBRL ’round-ups’ from the IFRS, XBRL International and others for the data in my take on the year. Read the rest of this entry »

The future start tag for all integrated reports?

December 31st, 2011 by Stewart McKie - Executive Advisor

In my roundup of the XBRL news of 2011 (coming soon), I mention the Integrated Reporting (IR) movement, which has been discussed in this blog over the years. The IR’s discussion document Towards Integrated Reporting: Communicating Value in the 21st Century is well worth a read and also some thought in response to the questions it helpfully poses within the text. But what interests me more is their new logo <IR>, which looks to me like an XBRL tag – something that we should not regard as a coincidence.

2011 US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy: The Journey Continues

February 10th, 2011 by Jordan Woodard - XBRL Compliance Manager

In my last Blog post about the 2011 taxonomy I explained how Rivet is preparing to support the changes from the old 2009 taxonomy to the new 2011 taxonomy. We have built our platform using the draft version of the 2011 taxonomy and are currently laying in the updated taxonomy that was delivered to the SEC On January 17th. The 2011 taxonomy has changed quite a bit from the draft version to the more finalized version delivered to the SEC, a summary of the change includes:

  • 3000 definition changes remained about the same as in the version delivered to the SEC
  • 2500 Data type changes in the taxonomy delivered to the SEC Read the rest of this entry »

2011 US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy: Behind the Curtain

January 4th, 2011 by Jordan Woodard - XBRL Compliance Manager

Imagine spending two years learning a new language. You begin to master the nuances of this language and become proficient enough to use it to communicate. You can eventually use it with confidence to express your thoughts and ideas with some precision. Then you wake up one day and learn the world around you is speaking a new language.

Such is the fate of those of us who labored to learn the 2009 US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy. In total, more than 4800 XBRL financial reports have been submitted to the SEC using this set of rules and definitions.  In 2011, the game twists with the introduction of a new taxonomy that includes more than 4000 changes of all shapes and sizes: Read the rest of this entry »

Critical Questions to Ask When Choosing an XBRL Provider: Part Two – Style vs. Substance

November 9th, 2010 by Barclay Friesen - COO

To build on my previous post about getting the right support from your XBRL vendor, I’d like to share some additional food for thought in navigating the world of financial reporting providers.

Last month IBM announced the acquisition of an XBRL technology company, which ignited lots of chatter in financial reporting circles.  When a technology superpower like IBM makes a move of this nature, people notice (media, investors, other biz superpowers, etc.).  The acquisition served as a very public validation that venturing into the XBRL business can be both strategic and lucrative. November 2nd, 2010 by Barclay Friesen - COO

Today’s publicly-traded companies have more choices than ever when it comes to selecting an XBRL provider.  For better or worse, new financial reporting companies seem to be setting up shop on a daily basis.  A Google search for “XBRL software” churns out nearly 350,000 results.  So, how do you filter through this clutter and noise to find an XBRL provider that will meet your needs? What is the XBRL Cloud Report?

March 3rd, 2010 by Charlie Hymer, CPA - Regional Sales Director

The Cloud Report is a validation tool created by a third party to assist with the XBRL filing process. In fact, some printers use this tool as their validation tool for their XBRL clients. Rivet currently uses its own proprietary tool to perform this function and does not rely on a third party for its validation. In addition, Rivet’s validation rules are based on official SEC guidelines, as are documented in the EDGAR manual. We work very closely with the SEC to ensure our interpretation of the SEC guidelines adhere to the EDGAR manual appropriately. Read the rest of this entry »

Fear Factor: Detail Tagging Edition

February 18th, 2010 by Charlie Hymer, CPA - Regional Sales Director

The cloud of fear surrounding the next phase of the XBRL Mandate, Detail Tagging, has been growing darker as vendors release the numbers on just how many tags are going to be required to be compliant. The truth is, some companies’ notes have a whole lot of numbers (sometimes in the thousands) that are going to need tags when the time comes. Because of the breadth and intricacy of such an undertaking, it’s important to make sure that your provider has a grasp on what they’re doing. At the end of the day, the printer doesn’t sign off on your financials, you do. Read the rest of this entry »
