Mutual Fund SEC XBRL Risk/Return Summary 497 Filings: Rivet Highly Encourages the “Encourage Method”

As the SEC’s Mutual Fund XBRL Risk/Return Summary mandate is now in full swing, we are gearing up to see a tremendous number of filings available to the public. As of today, there is a handful of XBRL R/R Summary filings posted to the SEC’s website /RSS feed, among which is a 497 filing.

The SEC recently released a Preparers Guide for the Mutual Fund R/R Summary Taxonomy.  This document includes some great tips and direction that all Mutual Funds and their XBRL service providers should be familiar with. Section Six of the Preparers Guide details the SEC’s recommendations regarding 497 or “Sticker” changes.  An XBRL 497 filing is required when content from the R/R Summary sections of the prospectus have changed.  This could be as simple as a new sentence added to the risk section, or an entirely new or reworked R/R Summary. The Tech Story Behind the SEC’s First XBRL Mutual Fund Filings

Seems like just yesterday I was sitting in strategy and design meetings to enhance Crossfire to work for mutual fund companies in preparing for the SEC’s mandate that takes effect on January 1, 2011.  Also feels like just yesterday, I was working with the SEC to create specific rendering engine logic to support the rendering of the risk/return summary filings. Now that Rivet actually has two of these risk/return summary filings under our belt, I would like to share some thoughts about what it took to get here.

First XBRL Mutual Fund Filing to SEC: a Lesson in Teamwork

On December 17th Rivet Software hit yet another milestone by creating the first Mutual Fund XBRL filings submitted to the SEC.  Of course we are thrilled that our software and services created especially for Mutual Fund companies were successful.  Rivet has been preparing for that first risk/return summary filing for more than a year… technology development, beta testing, building a Mutual Fund team of experts, and more.

Beyond these fundamental pieces that made those first filings successful, it’s worth mentioning that another mission-critical part of the equation is the teamwork that went into making it happen – not just within our office.  I’m referring to the teamwork between the filing agent/printer and Rivet. Public Comments Sought on 2010 Mutual Fund Risk/Return Summary Taxonomy by the SEC
