You’ve heard this by now – starting mid-2011 and onwards, all companies that are registered with the SEC are required to submit their regulatory reporting in XBRL format. Using an agreed-upon and shared XBRL taxonomy to report financial data makes it easier to produce peer group comparison and benchmarking reports. XBRL enables quick access to data you can analyze, and more time for value added work… just like the GPS system in your car makes you more efficient getting around town.

It is with great enthusiasm that we recently announced the launch of Rivet Software’s web-based, on-demand education center, Rivet University (Rivet U). Some people are surprised to hear Rivet is investing so much time and money in training our clients to be more independent. After all, a big part of our business is currently based on companies outsourcing all of their XBRL reporting needs to us.
Being a full-service provider for XBRL was the right way to approach the market, but it has never been Rivet’s end game. Complying with the SEC mandate for XBRL is the tip of the iceberg. Our mission has always been to give companies better financial reporting tools, for both internal and external purposes. XBRL is simply a tool. It’s also a great place to start in streamlining and transforming financial reporting workflows to create efficiencies and better quality controls.

I’ve never experienced a conference or convention quite like SXSW. Austin’s high-energy vibe is amplified by the influx of thousands of software developers, film makers, musicians, and every kind of artist.
We cut our way through bustling crowds outside the Hilton to enter the convention center, where we encountered a teaming mass of young innovators. The energy was palpable. Everywhere there were circles of gathered minds. Throughout the hallways they sat cross-legged on the floor, laptops open, all working together to churn out new ideas—and almost all using Macs of all things!
Our presentation was Corporate Sustainability Reporting and Transparency: New Success Standards. On our panel were Erin Meezan, VP Sustainability at Interface Group; Greg Janecek, SVP Sales/Mktg at Reddwerks; and Anthony Holm, Principal at The Patriot Group. Facilitating was Jay Whitehead, formerly of Corporate Responsibility Magazine.

In the Trigger Effect over on IT BusinessEdge, Michael Vizard reports that:
James Fisher, SAP vice president of marketing for enterprise performance management and finance solutions, says companies would do well to look beyond simply checking off another compliance box when it comes to XBRL. Once in place, Fisher says XBRL will provide a foundation for a new generation of collaborative financial management applications that will have a profound effect on business.
Well. Better late than never – as I commented on the blog:
