I’m going to finish up my coverage of the recent Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) conference in Amsterdam with what I guess is a kind of manifesto. I’ll call it the Sustainability Reporting Manifesto. I hope that for every reader who finds it all rather hokey, there will be another who finds it at least a little thought-provoking.
A Sustainability Reporting Manifesto…
We acknowledge that:
- Sustainability is “being with others”
- Opacity is the enemy of sustainability reporting
- Our financial performance and sustainable behaviour are connected
- Our left hand knows what our right hand is doing
- Our products/services are made/delivered by many people
- We leave a footprint wherever we tread
- Our environmental and social impact is in our gift
- We have a responsibility to be responsible
- Our stakeholders have a share in what’s at stake
- Nothing is sustainable unless it can develop or dream
