The Top 5 XBRL Tagging Questions from Rivet Customers in April 2009

My name is Deb Griffith and I am a member of our Professional Services Team here at Rivet Software. All day long I answer the phone helping our customers with their XBRL filing process. Below is the Top 5 List of Customer Calls I have been answering in April. For further details see our “Customer Support” tab at http://www.rivetsoftware.com/Customer_Support/Default.aspx.

Deb Griffith’s Top 5 List of Customer Calls:

#5 How do I markup my parentheticals? If you have the line item, “Accounts receivable (less allowances for doubtful accounts of $169 in 2008 and $136 in 2007)” you will need to tag up the accounts receivable element as well as the parenthetical.

a. First, you have to change the label of the base element to match your financials, such as “accounts receivable” to “Accounts receivable (less allowances for doubtful accounts of $78 in 2008 and $67 in 2007)”.

b. Second, you will also need to tag the parenthetical, “allowance for doubtful accounts” as well.

c. You can move the parenthetical elements you have to tag into a new top-level node so they will render in a separate report from your base financial statements. For example, you could create a new top-level report called “Consolidated Balance Sheet (Parentheticals)” and move the parenthetical elements, such as allowances or par value of common stock to this new report.

#4 How do I rename my top-level reports to match my financials? Both Dragon Tag and CrossTag allow you to create a new top level report which you can name to match your financial statements. Begin by right-mouse clicking on any top-level report and selecting, “Insert Top Level Group”. The wizard appears below to walk you through creating this new top level.

Type in the group title, with the name matching what your statement is called in your printed financials, such as, “Consolidated Statement of Earnings”.

Then you can include this statement in the calculation linkbase.

Last, you can Copy Report, so you can copy in all the elements you used to tag from a base statement, such as the Statement of Income into your new top-level report, rather than having to move each element individually.

Now you will see all the elements you had in the base statement, listed in your new top level report and you can remove the base statement from your extended taxonomy.

#3 What is an Edgar Validation Error?
Based upon the Edgar Manual, Rivet products will show you validation errors that conflict with the Edgar manual if you have chosen SEC.GOV as your reporting agency in the entity profile screen. A common error you may see is

· This means the element you extended has the same name (XML name) as a base element.

· To correct this, if you truly need this extension you will have to create a new extended element with a different name, such as StockholdersEquityDisclosure if you are using this element to tag notes. After you create the element, you can change the label to match what the name of your note is to comply with the SEC rule.

#2 What is that DEI validation error I am getting?
The DEI is a short-term for “Document & Entity Information”. This covers the information from the front page of your 10-K or 10-Q. Per the Edgar Manual, there are 13 elements that are required and listed below (Edgar Manual, March 2009 section, 6.5.20 & 6.5.21). If you are ambitious, you can go after additional elements outside of those required. (See our FAQs on our website under the Customer Support Tab regarding how to add this to your extended taxonomy and tag it properly)

And the number one question asked right now: (drum roll please)

#1 How do I get my formatting to match my printed financials in the IDEA Viewer?
The SEC has allowed some formatting in XBRL files including dollar signs, single underlines and headers. You can use Rivet’s products to see the new formatting of your files or submit a filing package to the IDEA viewer to preview how your files will look. https://ideapreview.sec.gov/previewer/ (See our FAQ Guide regarding formatting on our website for details of how to change the formatting in your taxonomy)

Headers: Now you can have headers render, such as “Current assets:”

$: Dollar signs will render on report

Underlines: Single underlines are now allowed
